Nelson Police respond to pedestrian-vehicle collision on Front Street

2025-1297: On March 9 at approximately 2:45 p.m., the Nelson Police Department (NPD), along with Emergency Health Services (EHS) and Nelson Fire & Rescue (NFR), responded to a pedestrian-vehicle collision at the intersection of Front Street and Hall Street.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a male pedestrian on the ground, receiving immediate assistance from several bystanders. Among them were an off-duty doctor, a nurse, and the Assistant Chief of Balfour Harrop Fire Rescue. Another community member helped first responders by managing traffic control.

According to witness statements and CCTV footage, the male pedestrian was traveling northbound down Hall Street on a skateboard and entered the intersection against a red light. Simultaneously, a vehicle traveling westbound on Front Street entered the intersection with a green light. The pedestrian collided with the rear driver’s side of the vehicle.

The male was transported to the hospital, where he was treated for multiple broken bones. Fortunately, he is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

“We want to express our sincere appreciation to all those who stepped in to render aid, manage traffic, and provide witness statements. The immediate response and willingness of civilians to assist were invaluable.” Says Corporal Van Huis.

Anyone who witnessed the incident and would like support from NPD Victim Services is encouraged to call 250-505-5657.

Police ask for publics help to recover stolen key fobs

2025-1364: Nelson police are seeking assistance in recovering stolen key fobs and have identified elementary-aged children as suspects following two recent thefts at the NDCC.

“There was no evidence that either woman had their vehicle broken into and nothing else of value was taken in either instance” says Special Constable Edwards.

The first theft occurred on the afternoon of March 7 and the second on the afternoon of March 12. Both victims, skating coaches at the NDCC, had their key fobs stolen from an unlocked changing room where they leave their belongings while teaching.

CCTV footage from March 7 shows a lone child entering the room and leaving moments later with a small object in hand. On March 12, the footage shows a group of children entering and exiting several rooms, including the one where the fobs were taken. Police believe these children to be the likely suspects, as no one else was seen approaching the room.

“We aren’t interested in charges but we would like to be able to return the property to its rightful owners,” Special Constable Edwards stated.

The NPD asks anyone, especially parents, who may know the children involved to come forward. Anyone in possession of the key fobs is encouraged to drop them off at the police detachment at 606 Stanley Street.

Nelson Police recover stolen vehicles out of Calgary

2025-1374: Police recovered a stolen truck and trailer this week, after receiving a call from a Calgary resident.

The caller reported the truck stolen to Calgary police and contacted the NPD, stating that his former employee, believed to be staying in Nelson with his girlfriend, likely had the vehicle. The caller had lent the truck to the employee for work purposes, with the agreement that it would be returned to Calgary in December.

When police attended the residence, they found not only the truck, but also an enclosed cargo trailer registered to a woman in Alberta. Upon contacting her, officers learned that she had also lent the trailer out to be used for a job. She had not reported it stolen but was surprised to learn that it was in Nelson. She requested that the trailer be towed.

Both vehicles were towed by Western Auto Wreckers and will remain stored until the registered owners pick them up. Both owners expressed gratitude for the recovery of their property and chose not to pursue charges.
