City of Nelson Receives BC Air Access Program Funding for Improvements to Norman Stibb’s Municipal Airport

Nelson, BC – Mayor and Council are pleased to announce that the BC Air Access Program (BCAAP) has awarded the City of Nelson $159,000 to improve the existing infrastructure at the Norman Stibb’s Municipal Airport. In addition, airport stakeholders and the City of Nelson will also be contributing to these project upgrades. The upgrades will improve the aerodrome by extending and resurfacing the tarmac apron. In addition, a new automated entrance gate will be installed, and the existing perimeter fencing will be repaired.

“I’m pleased that BCAAP has responded favourably to the grant submissions made by the Nelson and District Airport Society and is providing funding to undertake these airport improvements,” says Colin Innes, Airport Manager. “I am confident these funds will enhance the safety and reliability of the airport.”

Competition for BCAAP grants can be very competitive, and the Nelson applications were undoubtedly helped by widespread support from the community.  Leaders of local emergency services, BC Wildfire Services, search and rescue organizations, medical services, numerous business owners, and the Nelson Pilots’ Association all wrote letters supporting the applications and expressing their desire to see these necessary airport improvements take place. The Nelson and District Airport Society (NADAS) prepared and submitted the two grant applications on behalf of the City. A key strategy of Council’s 25 Point Economic Stimulus & Financial Stability Plan is to secure grants to spur economic activity and create jobs and spending in our community.

Rupert Robin, Co-Chair of NADAS, says “I am delighted that the Airport Society and the City’s first cooperative effort with NADAS has been successful and that the community will benefit from these improvements.”

The City of Nelson was also awarded a BCAAP grant of $75,000 in 2018 to go towards the $150,000 new aircraft refuelling system. The funds for this project were received, and the project was completed in March of this year.
