City of Nelson Launches a Citizen Survey on Climate Change
Nelson, BC— The City of Nelson is looking to better understand the diverse knowledge, values, and behaviors of its residents, to support the development of a Climate Change Action Plan that aligns with the community and its needs.
“When policy-makers understand and consider people’s lives, habits and priorities, they develop more effective and impactful responses to climate change,” says Kate Letizia, Climate Change Coordinator. “This survey will allow us to determine how the local culture and its shared values can shape climate action in Nelson.”
City Council committed to the development of a Climate Change Action Plan in June 2018 to ensure that Nelson continues to show leadership in reducing its footprint and preparing for the increasing impacts of our already changing climate. The new Action Plan – to launch in Summer 2020 - will act to both consolidate and coordinate existing policies and actions on climate change while considering the development of new actions to fill in gaps and address current and future risks and opportunities.
Targeted engagement with City of Nelson staff, local subject matter experts and community leaders has been ongoing since September 2019. However, this will be the first broad public engagement opportunity for residents and businesses.
Please sign up for ‘Public Consultation/Engagement Opportunities’ alerts using the City of Nelson’s Notify Me service, to be informed of additional engagement opportunities related to the development of Nelson’s Climate Change Action Plan.
Residents can fill out the Citizen Climate Change Survey between January 17- February 7, 2020.
