Hall Street Pier

Nelson's Hall Street Pier connects Hall Street to historic downtown Baker Street and serves as a welcoming gateway to Nelson’s waterfront.

Designed by local firm Stanley Office of Architecture (SOA) and MBAC, the Hall Street Pier has received significant recognition, including an Award of Excellence from Canadian Architect Magazine (2023), and top honours in both the Urban Design Interventions and Infrastructure and People’s Choice categories at the 2025 Azure Magazine AZ Awards. In 2025, the project was also awarded an IES Illumination Award of Merit for lighting design.

The Ladybird

Completed in 2024, the features of the Pier include a covered bandshell, a swimming area, and waterfront seating, and is home to the record-setting Ladybird speedboat, built right here on Kootenay Lake at Walton Boatworks in 1922. The speedboat was donated to the Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery in 1986 and painstakingly restored by archivist Shawn Lamb and a team of dedicated volunteers. Now, this important item from the museum's collection can be displayed on the waterfront in a way that allows the boat to once again serve as a beloved attraction to residents and visitors alike, while being preserved into the future.

A sustainable future

The wood used to construct the bandshell was selected for its natural ability to diminish damage from sun, water, and extreme high and low temperatures, requiring little maintenance. All of the pier's combined features create an ideal public space for social gatherings, and provides access to the water via the lower dock.

Rentals at the Hall Street Pier

Coming in 2026, residents will be able to rent the Hall Street Pier for gatherings including weddings, concerts, and markets.
