Nelson Fire and Rescue Services are active in the community:
- Promoting Fire Smart awareness, especially for homes near forested areas
- Visiting schools during Fire Prevention Week, Burn Awareness Week and fire drill competitions
- Providing homes and businesses with fire safety plans (PDF) and fire extinguisher training
- Organizing fireworks for Canada Day celebrations
- Guiding tours of the Fire Hall/ Museum to visitors, residents, and school groups
- Participating in community events such as the Senior’s Fair and Community Connect Day
- Organizing Disaster Day to promote emergency preparedness
- Hanging banners on Baker Street to support community initiatives
- Providing assistance to residents with smoke alarms, CO2 alarms, and fire safety concerns
- Participating in fundraisers, parades, and community events
Fire Department Museum
The fire department museum is located in the Fire Hall. Tours are offered between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and 10:30 a.m ,and 12 p.m. year-round. We have two 1944 Bickle-Seagrave fire trucks (an aerial and a pumper), memorabilia from the filming of the movie Roxanne, and information on fire safety.
Charities
The fire department and the union regularly raise funds for two principle charities, the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund and Muscular Dystrophy Canada. No logos.
Our staff also raise funds for local family shelters, offer first aid at mountain bike races, assist with supervising social gatherings, and bring out the antique fire trucks for automotive show n' shines.
