Solar Generation with Net Metering

Net Metering is a program whereby customers can offset their electric power purchase costs from Nelson Hydro with their own solar electric generation. 

Nelson Hydro supports Net Metering up to 25kW.  Here are the steps to get connected:

  1. Customer completes the Application for Net Metering and returns it to Nelson Hydro at nhdesign@nelson.ca.
    • You will need your Legal Description, your PID, the technical specifications of your unit, as well as the name and contact information of your electrical contractor.
  2. Nelson Hydro reviews the application and contacts you with questions.
  3. Nelson Hydro approves application.
  4. Electrical contractor completes the pre-work.
  5. Customer or contractor submits a Technical Safety BC Declaration to Nelson Hydro stating that the electrical system is installed to code.
  6. Nelson Hydro schedules the work.
  7. Nelson Hydro installs a bi-directional meter.
  8. Customer receives their first bill.

What Type of Meter is Needed?

Net Metering uses a bi-directional meter to measure how much electricity is coming into the meter and how much customer generation is coming out of the meter. Please click here for more information on bi-directional meters.
