Keep wildlife safe by managing attractants

What's Happening Posted on July 15, 2025

How you can help

• Store garbage securely. It must be placed curbside between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on your pick-up day.

• If food scraps must go in the garbage, freeze them until pick-up day to reduce odours.

• Clean BBQs after use.

• Do not leave pet food outside.

• Harvest fruit trees promptly.

• Put bird seed away until winter.

• Use a wildlife-friendly option for food scraps, like the FoodCycler. Learn more and join the waitlist at nelson.ca/organics.

• Do not feed wild animals.

• Manage waste bins at your workplace, keep them locked, and ensure the bear bar is engaged and locked in place.

• Encourage your workplace to become a certified WildSafe Business.

• Share these tips with family members, neighbours and coworkers to keep wildlife safe.

• Follow the City’s Waste Management and Wildlife Attractant Bylaw 3198.

How to report issues:

Myth: Reporting a bear means it will be destroyed.

Fact: Early reporting helps prevent conflict through education and enforcement — and is one of the best ways to keep both people and wildlife safe.

• Bear sighting? Contact WildSafeBC at nelson@wildsafebc.com or 250-551-6376.

• Immediate threat? Call the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 or call 911.

• Unsecured garbage? Report issues to City of Nelson Bylaw Services at bylawenforcement@nelson.ca or 250-505-5666. The City is increasing enforcement. Tickets for violations are $150.

Together, we can keep Nelson safe for both people and wildlife. For more information, visit nelson.ca/1020/Wildlife-in-Nelson.
