Small Fire Near Power Pole – One Arrest

On January 24, 2026, at approximately 7:40 a.m., Nelson Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a small fire near a power pole in the area of Front Street and Poplar Street.

Nelson Police and Nelson Fire & Rescue Services attended and located a burnt tree leaning against protective covering on a support wire attached to the pole. A small ground fire was extinguished.

Witnesses on scene were able to identify the suspect, a 40-year-old male, who was subsequently arrested for mischief to property. The damaged property belongs to the local hydro provider, with an estimated loss of approximately $1,000.

The individual was released on an Undertaking with a later court date.

“Nelson Police would like to thank the witnesses who remained at the scene and assisted, contributing to the arrest of a suspect, who is now facing charges,” said Inspector Jason Jewkes


Report of Youths on Roof – Gone on Arrival

On January 19, 2026, at 4:22 p.m., police received a report of four youths on the roof of a church near W. Richards Street.

An officer attended the area; however, the reported individuals were gone on arrival. No further police action was required.

“The Nelson Police Department reminds youths and parents that accessing rooftops and elevated structures can be dangerous and encourages safe behaviour to prevent injury,” said CSO Harmandeep SINGH


Arrest Following Shoplifting Complaint

On January 24, 2026, at approximately 11:55 a.m., officers responded to a shoplifting complaint at a local grocery store.

A suspect 33-year-old male was located nearby in the area of Front Street and Poplar Street, pushing a shopping cart containing the stolen items. The individual was arrested for theft under $5,000. Officers also executed three outstanding endorsed warrants from another jurisdiction.

The individual was later released on an Undertaking with Conditions, including a condition not to return to the business, and was issued an Appearance Notice in relation to the warrants.

The Nelson Police Department thanks the public for their assistance and reminds residents to report suspicious activity immediately.
