Liquid Waste Management Planning Grant Received

April 20, 2023

NELSON, BC –  The City of Nelson is pleased to announce the awarding of a $395,000 grant from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities Strategic Priorities Fund through the Government of Canada's Canada Community Building Fund. This grant will be used to develop a comprehensive Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP) for the city. The grant fully covers the cost to develop the LWMP.

Mayor and Council were presented a Strategic Wastewater Plan in January of 2023, with the primary recommendation for the need to complete a Liquid Waste Management Plan as the first step in upgrading aging infrastructure, including the wastewater treatment plant.

A LWMP is a process by which all the issues related to liquid waste for a community are identified and used to develop a community-specific solution. The LWMP process includes an extensive consultation process, with inputs from government agencies, members of the public, Indigenous communities, and interest groups.

Developing this Plan is a crucial step in ensuring the proper handling, treatment, and disposal of liquid waste in the city. The Plan will help identify and address new environmental requirements associated with liquid waste while ensuring that the city's infrastructure is adequately equipped to handle the volume of liquid waste generated by households and commercial businesses.

"Mayor and Council are appreciative of being awarded a $395,000 grant contribution from the federal government," says Mayor Janice Morrison. "This grant will allow us to proceed with the important planning stage of upgrading our aging wastewater treatment system.  This detailed planning is critical as these are multi-million dollar projects."

The City of Nelson is committed to protecting the environment and public health through responsible and sustainable management of liquid waste. The development of this Plan is a critical investment in the future of our community, and we are grateful for the support of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities Strategic Priorities Fund and the Government of Canada's Canada Community Infrastructure Program.

The City of Nelson looks forward to working with our consultant, Urban Systems, to develop a comprehensive and effective LWMP that will benefit the community for years to come. It is expected the Plan will be finalized by the end of 2026.
