[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Watermain Extension for Selous Creek

June 12 Update 1

Progress on installation of the watermain on the Great Northern Trail (GNT) slowed considerably at times over the past couple weeks due to rock. However, the past few days have been clear of rock and Kays Road Contracting Ltd., has made good progress recently. Currently the crews are working approximately 400 meters south of the Mountain Station parking lot, and are scheduled to reach the parking lot near the end of next week (approximately June 19).

Once the construction reaches the Mountain Station parking lot, the portion of the trail from the parking lot to the top of Stanley Street will be re-opened. The surfacing of this portion of trail will not be complete, but the trail will be passable. As an alternative, the South Sheppard Road bypass will remain open, so that trail users can choose to use the unfinished/unsurfaced GNT or continue with the bypass option.

As the construction crew enters the Mountain Station parking lot, the traffic control set-up will change daily as the work zone migrates across the back of the lot from south to north. Expect periodic delays and short detours in and around the parking lot as the crew works across the lot. Please be mindful of the construction zones, use the detours as directed, and pay attention to traffic control personnel and all construction signage.

This photo was taken looking south from the Mountain Station parking lot. The construction crew is working approximately 400 meters south of this lot and moving northward along the trail toward the lot. Three sandwich board style information signs are visible in the photo; the signage offers some project background and alerts trail users to the S. Sheppard Road bypass route.

This photo was taken looking south along the trail. The large diameter blue coloured watermain is stored along the ditch line.

June 12 Update 1

This photo was taken looking north. The photo shows the newly installed watermain, bed in sandy material. The labourers are working to haunch and bed the pipe.
