Sanitary Utility Project Update – Lakeside Drive at Airport Lift Station – Grit Chamber Construction

May 16, 2019

A construction zone has been delineated along Lakeside Drive adjacent the Real Canadian Wholesale Club to accommodate works on the City sanitary utility system. In order to accommodate two-way traffic along Lakeside Drive, and to complete the necessary excavation works, a temporary lane has been constructed alongside the airport fence line by the prime contractor, Marwest Industries Ltd. What is visible to most people,is the construction zone is a large excavation which has consumed much of the roadway and boulevard. This large excavation will accommodate a grit chamber, several large sanitary manholes, and interconnecting large diameter sanitary sewer pipes have been installed at the base of this excavation.

The bulk of the excavation is now complete and a large concrete grit chamber is now constructed at the base of the excavation intercepting all of the City sanitary sewer flow. The grit chamber has been operating as intended since May 9 and the focus for the remainder of the month is to fill the excavation and restore the surface. Re-paving of this portion of Lakeside Drive is scheduled for the last week of May.

The City also requests that drivers and pedestrians utilize caution while travelling through this busy area and follow the signs and direction provided by the flaggers. Minor delays are to be expected over the next couple of weeks as trucks will be hauling gravels into the site, followed by prep and paving. Flaggers will be on-site while trucks are hauling and paving crew mobilized.

The City and the Contractor would like to thank the local businesses for their patience and cooperation during this project, especially the Wholesale Club and Home Hardware, as they have been particularly accommodating.
