Garbage Odour Control

The easiest way to control odours from garbage is to keep potentially smelly items out of your garbage

  1. Backyard composting will remove fruit and vegetable matter from the waste stream and create nutritious compost for your garden. Composting is odour-free when properly done, and will not attract animals. The key is an equal mix of green material (kitchen scraps) and brown material (dried leaves, straw). Adding lime can help too.
  2. Meat and fish scraps (and vegetable scraps, if necessary) can be frozen until collection day; just keep a bag or sealed container in your freezer for that purpose.
  3. Consider other options to disposable diapers. Convenient and cost-effective alternatives, such as cloth diapers with flushable liners, are available from local shops.

To control odours in the can and prevent animals from being attracted, here are some ideas

  1. Use a solid garbage can with a lid that seals. Store it in a shed, garage or other animal-proof structure.
  2. Double-bag smelly garbage.
  3. Add a quarter cup baking soda and a quarter cup of borax to the garbage can to absorb odours and inhibit the growth of odour-producing molds and bacteria. Or add a handful of mothballs.
  4. Use commercial odour-absorbing products, available at your local hardware store. These are more effective than odour-masking products.
