2017 Community Service (Volunteer) Vacancies – Apply Today!

The City is seeking applicants to fill the Community Service vacancies listed below.  All applicants are required to

 Review the bylaw that relates to the vacancy they are applying for

  1. Review Council’s Committee and Commission Policy
  2. Complete the City’s application form [DOWNLOADABLE]
  3. Provide a cover letter and explain why their experience and skills
    make them a good candidate for the vacancy
  4. Provide a current resume

CURRENT VACANCIES:
Advisory Planning Commission [APC]

2 vacancies:

  • 1 Community Member at Large
  • 1 representative of the Environmental Sector

 The role of the Advisory Planning Commission is to advise Council on matters referred to the Commission which includes land use, project design and landscaping, community planning as well as bylaws and permits relevant to land use provisions of the Local Government Act.  Applicants are required to carefully review the APC’s mandate in Section 7 of the Advisory Planning Commission Bylaw.

Board of Variance [BoV]

1 vacancy

 The Board of Variance is an independent body that hears appeals for relaxation of zoning regulations, extension of non-conforming uses, relaxation of servicing requirements, reconstruction of non-conforming uses and relaxation of tree protection requirements. The Board primarily deals with requests for minor variances to the City of Nelson Zoning Bylaw regarding siting, size and dimensions of buildings where compliance would cause an undue hardship.  Applicants are required to carefully review Part 3 of the Board of Variance Bylaw.

Cultural Development Committee [CDC]

1 vacancy (Representative of the Aboriginal sector)

 This Committee leads Council in the strategic planning and development of Nelson’s cultural sector and works in close collaboration with all sectors of the community.  The Committee helps promote a high level of creativity, diversity and excellence in the cultural life of Nelson.  Part of its mandate is to review, monitor and evaluate the implementation of the City’s Comprehensive Cultural Policy and make recommendation to Council on a variety of policy and initiatives pertaining to the arts, culture and heritage sectors. Applicants are required to carefully review the CDC’s mandate in Section 2.9 of the Cultural Development Committee Bylaw.
