Committees
Nelson City Council annually appoints members of Council and interested members of the public to positions on Committees, Commissions and Boards. These positions are voluntary and are established by Council approved By-laws or Terms of Reference.
The 2011 deadline for applications has lapsed and Council has completed the annual appointment process.
If you are interested in serving your community, please check back to this site in November/December 2011 for updates and information on positions that may have become available for 2012.

Commissions & Committees (established by Council; voting member)
- Community Heritage Commission
This commission deals with issues relative to Nelson's heritage preservation and related items referred by City Council. - Cultural Development Commission
This commission is intended to complement existing cultural organizations and groups. It is directed by City Council to lead, collaborate and make recommendations on the implementation of the City's Comprehensive Cultural Sector Policy. - Nelson & District Youth Advisory Committee
This Committee is an adaptive and responsive team that supports the Nelson and District Youth Centre (NDYC) staff and youth through transitional times. The NDYC supports youth leadership through its services and programming which includes a drop in youth centre, indoor skatepark and a Youth Employment Resource Centre.

- Advisory Planning Commission
This commission deals with land-use planning issues and other related items referred by City Council.
Statutory Committees
- Board of Variance
The Local Government Act requires that a Board of Variance, acting as an independent body, hears appeals for relaxation of zoning regulations, extension of non-conforming uses, relaxation of servicing requirements, reconstruction of non-conforming uses and relaxation of tree protection requirements. The Board primarily deals with requests for minor variances to the City of Nelson Zoning Bylaw regarding siting, size and dimensions of buildings where compliance would cause an undue hardship. The City's Board of Variance Bylaw is currently being reviewed and members are only called upon when instances arise requiring review by the Board.

Municipal Library Board
The Nelson Municipal Library is administered by the Board of Trustees appointed by Nelson City Council in accordance with the BC Library Act and provides overall management of the Library operations.
