New Construction
When building new, residential or commercial, contact Nelson Hydro Customer Service as early as possible to start the appropriate site visit and work orders. Have the following information on hand when calling Nelson Hydro to help speed up the process.
- Name, mailing address and phone number for the applicant. This will be the person responsible for the new service and who the new account will be set up for,
- Location, street number, and postal code for the physical location of the work. This is the actual new building location,
- Legal property description (if known). This information is on the title for the property, and also available from the tax notice for the property,
- Electrical contractor information. The new service will require the services of a licensed electrical contractor.
Upgrade of an Existing Electrical Service
When upgrading an existing electrical service, contact Nelson Hydro Customer Service as early as possible to start the appropriate site visit and work orders.
Nelson Hydro has a fixed fee connection rate schedule based on the amperage, voltage and overhead or underground delivery system. It is your electrical contractors' responsibility to inform Nelson Hydro what size and type of electrical service your construction requires. That electrical service size, and whether the service is overhead or underground will determine your connection charges.
Once contact has been made with Nelson Hydro, a site visit will be arranged and Nelson Hydro will choose the electrical meter location on the building, and the attachment details. If the new construction requires an extension of primary and/or secondary service, that project will be reviewed during the site visit. Since Nelson has a large rural area, it is often the case that new construction requires an extension of existing infrastructure. These extension costs are borne by the customer/developer requiring the new service(s).
Electrical Service Repair
If your existing electrical service is out of date, and needs replacement or repair, you will need to hire an electrical contractor. Nelson Hydro will co-ordinate the required repairs with your contractor.
Relocation of Existing Electrical Service
If your existing electrical service is in conflict with renovations or additions that you are planning, it may be possible to relocate the electrical service to allow the renovation or addition. Contact Nelson Hydro Customer Service to arrange a site visit to explore the options available.

Disconnection of Existing Electrical Service
If you require the existing electrical service to be removed from the structure completely, to allow demolition for example, contact Nelson Hydro Customer Service to arrange a site visit to explore the options available.
Temporary Disconnection of Existing Electrical Service
There are occasions when the existing electrical service may need to be temporarily disconnected from the structure. This can be arranged through your electrical contractor and Nelson Hydro.
This temporary disconnection may be required to allow for tree removal from around your electrical service. It is the customers' responsibility to keep the service lines to the house clear of trees and overgrowth. If you are planning to have the lines cleared of trees, the tree removal is at the customers' cost.
You can arrange through Nelson Hydro to have the lines temporarily disconnected on a pre-arranged day and re-connected later the same day after the tree work is complete. Typically, this service is offered from Nelson Hydro at no cost. However,
if it is deemed that the scope of work is extensive, there will be a charge from the project, payable by the customer.
NOTE
If you are planning this type of work, you must also arrange to have the communications lines removed on the same day.
No electrical connections can be scheduled until all payments, permits and necessary rights of way are in place.
