Cold Weather Ahead! Be Prepared!

COLD WEATHER AHEAD (Facebook Post (Landscape)) (1)

Nelson is expected to experience a few days of cold weather in the coming days.

For those spending time outdoors and in need of a place to warm up, there are several public spaces for refuge, including:

  • Nelson Public Library: Open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. *Note: the Library is opened until 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Community Recreation & Senior Centres
  • Various Religious Centres throughout the city
  • The Hub
  • Salvation Army

To stay warm and dry, remember to:

  • Limit outdoor activities to the warmest times of the day
  • Increase your body temperature with warm/hot showers or baths
  • Layer clothing to stay warmer
  • Be aware of cold-related illness symptoms
  • Decrease drafts in your house by sealing up windows and doors

Signs of cold-related illness may include:

  • Shivering (although in severe cases, shivering may stop)
  • Cold, pale, or bluish skin
  • Numbness or tingling in extremities (fingers, toes, nose, or ears)
  • Slurred speech or difficulty speaking
  • Confusion, memory loss, or drowsiness
  • Exhaustion or extreme fatigue
  • Weakness and poor coordination
  • Slow, shallow breathing

If you suspect someone is experiencing a cold-related illness, call 9-1-1 and take measures to warm them up gradually while awaiting help. For more tips on staying safe during cold weather, check out Interior Health’s extreme cold preparedness tips.

Remember to check on your neighbours, let's keep warm and stay safe together!
